Child Car Seats

As part of their Think! - Child Car Seats campaign the Government have produced a parent's 'pocket guide' to buying and fitting a child's car seat, which includes practical tips and advice.

Research shows the best protection for children is putting them in properly fitted, purpose-made child car seats appropriate for their weight and size. When buying new car seats adults are urged to try them in their car before they buy and get a trained person to demonstrate how to fit the seats properly.

The 'pocket guide' urges parents' to:

  • fit the seat properly every time;
  • take time to get the child comfortably strapped in;
  • make sure the adult seatbelt passes through all the correct guides;
  • never modify the seat or adult seatbelt to make it fit;
  • ensure the child seat is tight in the adult seat;
  • that the adult seatbelt is not bent over or resting on the child seat frame;
  • to never fit a rear-facing seat with an active airbag in front of it.

You can obtain a copy of the guide from:

  • the DTI Free Literature line. Call 0870 1226 236 and quote product code T/INF/697;
