Breastfeeding Awareness Week

National Breastfeeding Awareness Week is an annual health campaign coordinated by the Department of Health to promote the benefits of breastfeeding and encourage more mums to give it a go.

Breastfeeding Awareness Week
is 13th - 19th May 2007

Since 1993, the Department of Health has coordinated an annual campaign, National Breastfeeding Awareness Week, aiming to highlight that breastfeeding is good for the health of mother and baby. We would like women to recognise their right to breastfeed anytime and anywhere and for friends, family and health professionals to provide support for breastfeeding.

Since 2004 the campaign has particularly focused on younger mothers and low-income families as these groups have the lowest breastfeeding rates.

National Breastfeeding Awareness Week 2007 is scheduled to run from Sunday 13 until Saturday 19 May. The Department of Health is again encouraging supporters to help promote the campaign in their area.

The new NHS breastfeeding website can be found at www.breastfeeding.nhs.uk

The Infant Feeding Survey 2005 is available at: www.ic.nhs.uk
