Labouring in a birthing pool is proven to speed up labour and result in lower rates of intervention such as episiotomy, forceps, ventouse and C-section, The hospital unit bathtub is better than nothing but it does not allow the buoyancy and freedom of movement that are the drivers of the benefits of using water. Often the unit does have a birthing pool but it isn’t available. Therefore, hospitals and birth centres are increasingly willing to allow mothers to bring a portable birthing pool into the unit with them to guarantee their ability to use water effectively. Birth-Pool-in-a-Box is the pool most frequently taken into a unit. We have worked closely with midwives and mothers to understand what the IDEAL birth pool would be.
