Production of Sperm

It is worth understanding that sperm production is important. Failure to conceive is sometimes the result of a low sperm count. Men produce sperm in their testes. It takes 100 days for sperm to be ready for their eventual journey. For optimum production of sperm, the testes need to be kept cooler than the rest of the body. Normally body temperature is 37.2°C but the scrotum ensures that the testes are kept between 2°C and 5°C lower.

Studies have found that the wearing of tight fitting underwear, trousers and shorts can reduce significantly the number of sperm a man produces. This is because the testes are being kept too close to the body and air cannot circulate around to cool them off. In the same way, men who sit down for long periods can also have a lower sperm count. Hot baths and showers can also have the same effect! Sperm production can also be affected by other factors such as diet, excessive alcohol, smoking and exercise.
