Menstrual Cycle

The menstrual cycle provides us with one of the keys as to predicting a woman's fertile times, the menstrual cycle can be divided into three key phases.

Phase One

From Menstrual to Ovulation

This phase begins after your period. During this phase the lining of the uterus is prepared and the egg becomes ready. The length of this phase varies between women. In some women this phase may last 18 or more days, while for others it is only 12 or even less. Some women also find that one month they can have quite a long phase and then another time have a much shorter phase. It is important to find out the length of your own phase Learn about your cycle and to see if there is a pattern to it. Making love in the last part of this phase means that sperm will be available to fertilise the egg. This means that you can increase your chances of conceiving if you have sex in the five days leading up to ovulation.

Phase Two

Ovulation

The egg is released from one of the ovaries. Women are fertile in this phase, although it is fairly short as the egg needs to be fertilised within two or three days.

Phase three

Menstruation (having a period)

In this phase, the lining of the womb becomes thick enough to receive a fertilised egg. If the egg has not been fertilised, the lining is shed and preparation begins again ready for the next cycle. The unused lining disintegrates and passes down through the neck of the womb and out through the vagina. This is a woman's monthly bleed or period.
