Support links

As we are not health professionals, we do not feel that it is appropriate for us to provide medical information on the site.

Instead we will use this section to provide links to organisations and web sites that offer parents information and support on day-to-day medical issues which they may confront.

If you know of a good reference site please forward the details to: contributions@forparentsbyparents.co.uk

If you have specific worries you should contact your Doctor or Health Visitor.

"My son has had Eczema since he was about a month old, it's been infected, he's been seen by a Dermatologist and to emollient clinics. We've tried all the creams and lot, and home remedies and nothings helped, then one day I changed his milk and it went! His Health Visitor and Dermatologist said changing his milk wouldn't help but I just had a gut feeling that I had to go with.

He was on C&G Number 2 for hungry babies and I have now changed him to Aptamil Number 1 and he is a different child, his skin is soft and his bowels are formed and regular (previously they were soft or loose and strange colours and irregular). So please let people know about this just in case their baby is reacting to the milk too. We had months of unnecessary suffering."

We'd also like to share one mum's tip for a child with a high temperature:

"My daughter has been ill over the weekend with a high temperature and sore throat. She was very reluctant to eat or drink anything. As I worried about getting fluids into her Nanny came to the rescue with ice lollies, they went down a treat, cheered her a little and calmed my fear of her dehydrating.

Obviously we were using calpol and rang the healthline and doctor etc but this did help us all feel like we were doing something to make her feel better."

The Family Health Maze by Anne Page and Gill Keep

The Family Health Maze, published by the National Family and Parenting Institute (NFPI), aims to give parents basic, practical information about their rights and responsibilities where their child's health is concerned. It also offers advice on negotiating the health service, from school nurses to specialist treatment, and offers reliable sources that parents can turn to for help and advice.

Can I see my child's medical records?
Can my cohabiting partner give consent for medical treatment?
How can I sign up with a GP?
What will happen if my child gets ill on a school trip?
How can I get a second opinion?

These are the sorts of questions answered in this colourful 32-page book arranged in helpful, easy to follow sections that add up to a useful source of reference for parents, whatever the age of their child.

For details of how to obtain a copy of the book or to download a pdf version visit www.e-parents.org/data/info/tips.htm.
