New Car Seat Regulations
|
New child car restraint laws which come into effect on 18th September 2006, could save up to
2,000 child casualties per year. The Department of Transport will be running an awareness
campaign throughout the summer so that parents can be made aware of the changes and
understand the new legislation.
We have done the homework for you and below are the rules.
The Law for children up to 3 years old
Front Seat
Your child MUST use the correct restraint
Rear Seat
Your child MUST use the correct restraint
Exemption
When you travel in a taxi if a child restraint is not available your child
may travel in the rear unrestrained. This is the ONLY exemption, but should
only be used for practical reasons and it was allowed on this reasoning as
opposed to safety. Always try to use your child's car seat whenever possible
The driver is legally responsible to ensure that the child is correctly restrained
|
The Law for children over 3 and up to 1.35m high, or the age of 12
Front Seat
Your child MUST use the correct restraint
Rear Seat
Your child MUST use the correct restraint, where seat belts are fitted
Exemption
There are 3 exemptions
- journeys in a taxi
- if your child is travelling a short distance for an unexpected reason
- if two child restraints in the rear prevent fitting a third restraint
In addition, children 3 and over can travel unrestrained in the rear if
seat belts are not available.
The driver is legally responsible to ensure that the child is correctly restrained
|
The Law for children over 1.35m high, or the age of 12 or 13
Front Seat
Your child MUST use an adult seat belt
Rear Seat
Your child MUST use an adult seat belt
The driver is legally responsible to ensure that the child is correctly restrained
|

to use a rear-ward facing restraint.
